Faculty of Agriculture

Our Mandate

The mandate of the Faculty is to improve the agriculture sector through training, research and transfer of improved technologies to the farming community.

The objectives of the Faculty are:

  • Preparation of qualified individuals in the different disciplines of agricultural activities to meet the needs of the society and the job market.
  • Provide high quality education to produce scientists who can assist in the advancement of the society.
  • Continuous development of the undergraduate and graduate programs to meet scientific advancement.
  • Conduct research and applied studies that contribute in solving Kenya agricultural sector developmental problems.
  • Enhance the cultural and scientific relations between the faculty and other similar Arab and international faculties through joint mission activities, conferences, joint projects, and exchange of expertise

Departments

Teaching in the Faculty

Experience the high quality of learning offered by the faculty. The faculty provides a good studying environment for the students, high-quality teaching by competent, highly motivated, and committed lecturers, and provision of well-equipped laboratories and field demonstration units.

Practicals and field demonstrations

Students in the Faculty practice theoretical knowledge acquired through practicals, field demonstrations, field trips, and field attachment.

Research

Research in the faculty concentrates on three core areas: livestock productivity, crop productivity, and agricultural product value addition for food security, income generation, and employment creation. Research in livestock and plant sciences focuses on genetics, breeding, reproduction, development, nutrition, pathological and infectious diseases, climate-smart agriculture practices (CSA), value addition, and management of animals and plants for improved productivity and efficiency in the face of climate change.

Extension/Outreach
The Faculty is actively involved in extension by providing the following services to the community and the nation at large:

  • Soil and Animal Feed analyses
  • Ambulatory services
  • Artificial Insemination (AI) services
  • Advisory services on climate-smart agricultural practices (CSAPs) and good agricultural practices (GAPs)
  • Involvement in climate change adaptation and mitigation activities
  • Various student clubs’ activities, e.g., Agribusiness Club, Food Science Club, Chuka University Horticulture Students Association (CUHSA), To improve on its extension services, the faculty envisages the provision of the following in the future:
  1. High-quality breeding stock (dairy goats and Ilamas)
  2. Farm waste composting and recycling techniques
  3. Short courses on innovative technologies in livestock and plant production
